On April 15, 1950 at Yale University, Paul
Weiss called to order the first meeting of the Metaphysical
Society of America. Building on the work he had started three
years earlier with the founding of the Review of Metaphysics,
Weiss sought to create a space for metaphysics within the
often-hostile terrain of American philosophy. As the opening
declaration of the Constitution states, “The purpose of the
Metaphysical Society of America is the study of reality.”
