Combinatorics Project - "Hey Wait! What's that?!"
Hopefully by now you've purchased your text book. It's big, right? There is a wide, wide world of combinatorics and we
will only be able to explore a tiny piece of it in this class. The goal of this project is to give you a chance to glimpse a
little of what we DIDN'T do.
Your mission:
• Pick a section of the book that we aren't covering.
• Tell me which you want to do.
• Schedule a time to present.
• Read the section.
• Come chat with me about any parts you didn't understand.
• Tell us about your section!
You should give a 15-20 minute presentation on the section you're covering. Presentations will be on Fridays during class,
throughout the semester. You can present any Friday you like, but you must schedule your presentation at least a week before
you give it, and by November 1 at the latest.
Just about any topic is fair game. I plan to present most of Chapters 1-4, but I will skip some sections in these Chapters.
After Chapter 4, we will cover selected topics from the rest of the book (feel free to request sections you'd like to hear about),
but we won't get to most of it. When you notice something that catches your eye and makes you think "Hey wait! What was that!?"...
that's your topic! Snatch it up before someone else does. And by the way, I recommend that you choose early. If you pick a
topic that is deep into the book there will probably be a lot of material leading up to it. When we talk over your topic we
can decide if it's accessible, and if necessary I will cover some of the lead-in material in class, or help you work through it
until you can approach your topic.
Have fun! Ask questions!
