TEXTBOOK: Applied
Calculus, 6th
Edition, by S. T. Tan
EXAMINATIONS:
Four
examinations will be given and will be closed book in nature and will include
both multiple choice and longer answer formats.
In general, no makeup examinations will be given. If an examination is missed due to illness
then (1) the illness must be of sufficient severity to be verified in writing
by the University Health Center or by a local physician, and (2) the instructor
must be informed prior to the examination.
If it is decided that there are sufficient reasons for a makeup
examination to be given, that exam will be scheduled for the last day of class.
QUIZZES:
There will be at least two quizzes given between consecutive
examinations. Questions on the quizzes
will generally reflect the character of questions encountered in the homework.
There will be NO MAKEUP QUIZZES although the lowest quiz grade will be dropped
so if you miss a quiz it will not adversely affect your grade.
FINAL EXAMINATION:
According to the Fall 2009 Course Offerings Schedule, the
final for this class has been scheduled for Monday, December 14 from 1:00 pm to
3:00 pm. Make your travel plans accordingly. The final exam is comprehensive and has the
same type of format at the in class exams.
HOMEWORK:
Assigned
homework has the following three purposes:
(1) To specify the material students will be responsible for, (2) To
provide relevant examples for class discussions and, most importantly, (3) To
provide material through which the students can enhance their knowledge of the
subject. Homework will not be
collected. Students will be responsible
for all problems assigned in the text.
At the beginning of each class period, time will be devoted to answering
questions pertaining to the homework.
Mathematics can only be mastered through practice—which means completing
all homework assignments.
GRADING SYSTEM:
The four
in-class examinations are each worth 100 points. The final examination is worth 150
points. The quizzes will collectively contribute
50 points toward the final grade. Of
this total of 600 points, final grades will be based upon the following
percentages of the 600:
88% - 100% --- A
76% - 87% --- B
64% - 75% --- C
52% - 63% --- D
0% - 51% --- F
Plusses and minuses are
discretionary.
ELECTRONIC
DEVICES:
Only calculators may be used during class, but they may not
e used during exams or quizzes. Please
shut off your cell phones and unplug your music devices.
SPECIAL NEEDS:
If you have a documented disability for
which you will need special accommodations in this course, you must make
arrangements for such accommodations through Disabled Student Services, DREAM. Until such arrangements are made, no special
accommodations should be expected.
