Gonzaga Socratic Club

The Gonzaga Socratic Club was founded in Fall 2004 to promote reflection on and inquiry into the Christian worldview. In the spirit of Socrates, our aim is to "follow the argument wherever it leads" concerning Christian beliefs and practices. Anyone interested in thinking about and discussing Christianity--and more broadly religion, worldview beliefs, and contemporary culture--is welcome to participate in the activities of the Gonzaga Socratic Club. While the word "club" is in the name, there are no membership requirements, secret handshake, or hazing ritual. Just join us when we meet! (There is an email you can sign up for to stay current with information about the Club; see below.)

Meetings of the Gonzaga Socratic Club are normally held once a month during the academic year, four times each semester. The 2023-24 Academic Year marks the 20th anniversary of the Gonzaga Socratic Club. A special event of this 20th anniversary year is a talk by C.S. Lewis scholar and historian of the Oxford Socratic Club, Jim Stockton, who will address Lewis's role in the Oxford Socratic Club as a model of integrating faith and reason. The Gonzaga Socratic Club takes its inspiration from the Oxford Socratic Club, which was founded at Oxford University in 1941 and presided over by C. S. Lewis from its founding until his move to Cambridge University in 1954. The Gonzaga Socratic Club held a special celebration of C. S. Lewis at the meeting on Friday, November 22, 2013, the 50th anniversary of Lewis' death; video of that event is available here. The 10th Anniversary of the Gonzaga Socratic Club featured a look back to the history of the Oxford Socratic Club by philosopher James Stockton of Boise State University; video of that event is here.
