Listed below are deadlines for the semester. Generally, the problems listed under a date should be solved before that date. Problems for the first 10 weeks are roughly grouped by topic; it's up to you identify the topic. Finding the theme might help you solve problems, but don't let it keep you from being creative (one person's calculus problem might be another person's geometry problem). Notes and other information about the problems will be added as issues arise. Note that the future is uncertain and subject to change.
- 8/27-29: Introductions and the syllabus.
- 9/3-5: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 9/10-12: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 9/17-19: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 9/24-26: Write your math cover letter/personal statement/autobiography (due by Friday 9/27). Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 10/1-3: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 10/8-10: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 10/15-17: Practice exam due (take-home open 10/11-15). Present problems from the practice exam.
- 10/22-24: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 10/29-31: Solve the following problems and prepare for presentations.
- 11/5-7: Solve all the following problems and prepare your favorite 6 for presentation.

11/12-14: The remaining problems on the exams come from assorted advanced topics (abstract algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, topology, etc.). Solve those you can.
- GRE 1268: 8, 12, 19, 23, 27, 29, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42, 47, 49, 50, 53, 57, 60, 62, 63, 65, 66
- GRE 8767: 17, 18, 26, 43, 49, 54, 58, 59, 63, 64, 66
- Submit a proposal of 5 problems you might like to present to the faculty (due 11/17)
- The problems may come from GRE 1268, GRE 8767, GRE 0568, GRE 9367, GRE 9768, or GRE 9799.
- Plan to present the problems as if they aren't multiple choice and choose accordingly.
- Find problems that will allow you to show off your math skills (not too easy, but something you understand fully).
- 11/19-21: Problems 1-10 of GRE 9799.
- 11/26:
Practice exam (spend 1 hour 11/25-12/1)available in Canvas, but not required. - 12/2-6: Final presentations.
- All math professors are invited to attend.
- You will present one of your 6 selected problems.
- You may work from notes.
- You won't know in advance which of your 6 problems you'll be presenting.
- The professors will ask questions after your presentation.

Saturday, November 23 or Saturday, December 7: Major Field Test in Mathematics.
- 9:45-12:00 in Herak 257
- The exam consists of 2 one-hour sections with the opportunity for a break between sections.
- No calculators or outside materials are allowed.
- Bring a pencil for scratchwork.

- There is no penalty for guessing.
