Schedule
The schedule below is a record of what we have actually done as well as an approximate projection of what we will do. Materials and assignments will be posted here. Practice problems will not be collected: you should do them, check your solutions in the back of the book (when possible), and bring questions to class.
- Week 1
- 1/13: Discuss the syllabus, 1.1, 2, US census quick facts. Practice problems in chapter 1: 1, 3, 5, 11, 28, 29.
- 1/15. 1.3,4. Practice problems: 33abc, 37, 41, 45, 59.
- Week 2
- 1/20: Finish chapter 1 and start counting (2.3) in a worksheet.
- 1/22: 2.1,2. Practice problems in chapter 2: 3, 6, 9.
- Week 3
- 1/25: 2.2,3 and Pew Religious Landscape Survey. Practice problems: all odds in section 2.
- 1/27: 2.3 and a worksheet. Practice problems: 29-37 odd, 41, 43.
- 1/29: 2.4, another worksheet, and WeBWorK HW01 assigned (due 2/3).
- Week 4
- 2/1: 2.4 and 3.1. Practice problems in chapter 2: 45-51 odd, 55, 56, 57, 67.

- Week 7
- 2/22: a worksheet on 4.1 and 4.2. WeBWorK HW03 assigned (due 2/26).

- 2/26: a worksheet on earthquakes. Suggested problems in chapter 4: 11-25 odd, 28, 29.
- Week 8
- 2/29: 4.3,4 (special distributions calculator from UAH). Extra exam problem due today. Practice problems: 33-37, 41-49, 59-63, 103-109, 113 (odds in all intervals).
- 3/2: Normal approximation to binomials (see problems 53 and 55 in the book). A review guide (please report any errors or typos)
- 3/4: Exam 2 covering 3.6 and 4.1-4 (excluding gamma distributions).
- Spring Break
- Week 9
- 3/14: 5.1,2 (discrete only). Suggested problems in chapter 5: 1-7 odd, 75
- 3/16: 5.3,4 and final project description. Suggested problems: 37a, 39, 41, 46, 47, 49, 51.
- 3/18: 6.1 and 7.1 introduced in a worksheet. Suggested problems in chapter 6: 1, 7, 9.
- Week 10

- Week 13
- 4/11: Exam 3 (a review guide). Exam scores.
- 4/13: Chapter 9 introduced in a worksheet (now with solutions).
- 4/15: Intro to chapter 12
- Week 14
- 4/18: More hypothesis tests (problems due on Friday 4/22; solutions). Final project outline due:
- Specify exactly what numbers/data you will be using. Include information about the source of the data, whether it is a census or not, who collected it or how it will be collected, and any other relevant details;
- Specify exactly what question/idea you will be investigating;
- Specify exactly (if possible) the statistical methods you will be using to connect your numbers/data to your question/idea (i.e. hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, regression, prediction intervals).
- 4/20: prediction intevals (from 7.3) and simple contingency tables (from 14.3).
- 4/22: R problems (use R Fiddle or download and install R and maybe R Studio).
- 4/18: More hypothesis tests (problems due on Friday 4/22; solutions). Final project outline due:
- Week 15
- 4/25: Another R worksheet (turn this one in).
- 4/27: Review (and an R fiddle). Additional R resources:
- 4/29: Review. Collected formulas from exams 1-3. The final exam will consist of an in-class portion (10-12 problems) and a take-home portion (3-4 problems). You should bring a calculator and up to 5 pages of notes to the in-class portion. Prior review guides: exam 1, exam 2, and exam 3.
- Final Exam Week May 3-6
- Exam 3 corrections are due when you take the final.
- Final Exam Schedule
- 5/2: Office hour 2:00-3:00. Final Exam Take-Home Questions and the M&M data.
- 5/3: Office hour 3:30-4:30 and Review Session 4:30-5:30.
- 5/4: Office hour 2:00-3:00. Exam for section 2 at 3:30.
- 5/5: Exam for section 3 at 8:00.
- 5/6: Take-home portion of the exam due. Final project due. A draft rubric.
