Schedule
The schedule below is a record of what we have actually done as well as an approximate projection of what we will do. Readings, homework assignments, and worksheets will be posted as they are assigned. Most homework problems will come from The Book of Proof (freely available online; click on the title for a link). Homework sets are due by 4:00 PM on the date indicated. Portfolio entries should be printed and brought to class on the due date? A revised copy is due by 4:00 PM on the following day.
- Week 1
- 9/1: discuss the syllabus and the proof portfolio (and maybe some questions or psuedaria).
- 9/3: 1.1-5.
- Week 2
- 9/6: Labor Day; no class.
- 9/8: 1.5-7. Homework due today:
- 1.1: 3, 4, 11, 13, 17, 25, 29, 30, 43, 44;
- 1.2: 1 (make use of ellipses), 4, 9, 11, 15;
- 1.3: 4, 5, 9, 10 (use ellipses), 13, 14;

- 9/10: 1.8,10 and 2.1. First LaTeX assignment (pre-portfolio entry) due today.

- 9/13: 2.2-6 and a worksheet.

- 10/1: Chapter 5 and a worksheet (.tex).

- 10/4: Chapters 5 and 6. Portfolio expository entry 2 due today.
- 10/6: Chapters 5 and 6.
- 10/8: Chapter 6. and a worksheet (.tex). Homework due today:

- 10/11: Chapter 6 and 7.
- 10/13: Chapter 7. Portfolio proof A (.tex) due today.

- Week 8
- 10/25: Founders' Day; no class.
- 10/27: More perfect numbers (tex), continue the worksheet from last class. Portfolio proof B (.tex) due by 11:59 PM today.
- 10/29: Portfolio review. Wrap up perfect numbers. Homework due today:
- Ch. 8: 13, 14, 26, 27
- Ch. 9: 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 15, 28, 30
- 11/1: Chapter 10. Read the introduction to chapter 10 before class. Revisions of portfolio proof B due today.
- 11/3: Chapter 10 continued. Portfolio proof C (.tex) due today.
- 11/5: Portfolio review and a worksheet. Homework due today:
- Ch. 9: 16, 23, 34
- Ch. 10: 1, 2, 5, 8, 13, 14
- 11/8: Continue chapter 10.
- 11/10: Review for the take-home exam on chapters 5-10 (proofs of all kinds).
- Class is optional: use the time in whatever way is most helpful.

- 11/12: More chapter 10 (strong induction). Portfolio proof D (.tex) due by 11:59 PM today.
- 11/15: Portfolio review. Read 10.2 Proof by Strong Induction and 10.3 Proof by Smallest Counterexample.
- 11/17: Chapter 11. Start a worksheet (also in .tex).
- 11/19: Chapter 11. Portfolio proof E (.tex) due by 11:59 PM today. Homework due today:

- 11/22: Finish chapter 11 and introduce functions (chapter 12). Portfolio D revision due today.
